Careers that maintain heavy equipment are critical, essential, and in demand! Heavy equipment supports construction, manufacturing, transportation and logistics, the agricultural sector, and more. The Basic Electrical-Heavy Machinery microcredential is one of two microcredentials, developed in partnership with the New York State Department of Transportation, designed to prepare existing professionals and those new to the field with the skills needed to support heavy equipment. Being mechanically inclined and having a general knowledge of hand tools is a good foundation for pursuing this series. This basic electrical microcredential focuses on electrical fundamentals, allowing you to easily identify electrical components, schematic symbols, circuit types, wiring diagrams, and electrical testing tools specific to heavy equipment. You will understand how to effectively troubleshoot electrical problems in maintaining and repairing heavy equipment. Successful completion adds specialized skills for those familiar with vehicle fleet maintenance and prepares those new to the field to immediately apply for entry-level technician positions. Note that there is an increasing demand to train current mechanics at heavy equipment dealerships, farms, and independent shops. According to AED (Associated Equipment Distributors), “the equipment industry has a job opening rate three times higher than the national average,” and “among AED member respondents, 95% agree there is a skill gap in the industry.” See the related microcredential in Basic Hydraulics (for heavy equipment) linked below.
Credits earned in the completion of this microcredential can be applied toward completion of a related certificate or degree program. It is a building block that gives you a jump start to education and career success.
