Vacuum technology is critical for manufacturing high tech products such as semiconductors, optics, healthcare products, architectural glass and more. This Vacuum Technology microcredential was developed in partnership with the MNT-EC (Micro-Nano Technology Educational Center), an NSF National Center of Excellence in Nanotechnology Education. This microcredential provides you with the skills, knowledge and experience necessary to understand vacuum system functions and characteristics, perform essential calculations, and select proper components and materials for different functions. You will be able to design, build and test/troubleshoot a basic rough vacuum system, analyze experimentally obtained data and prepare a well-written laboratory report. Note: Completion of this microcredential is recommended for individuals who completed or are close to completion of a 2-year technical degree (with necessary background in college algebra and chemistry or physics) or a four-year technical or non-technical degree and plan to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to enter the field of vacuum technology. For those without the necessary academic background, there is the opportunity to add one additional course to the microcredential to provide you with the necessary foundational knowledge in technical physics, general chemistry, electrical circuits and college math. Successful completion of this microcredential prepares you for continued study and to immediately apply for technician positions in vacuum technology to support vacuum-based processes across a broad range of industries including nanotechnology, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), glass and optics, LED and solar cell and thin film coatings.
Credits earned in the completion of this microcredential can be applied toward completion of a related certificate or degree program. It is a building block that gives you a jump start to education and career success.
