All children should have the right to read, but what does the research say about how they learn? Literacy experts at SUNY New Paltz have created a seven-week, fully online microcredential to provide teachers, literacy coaches, school leaders, parents and more with essential skills in the basic building blocks of the Science of Reading through five modules in Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension. New York State Certified teachers will be awarded 35 CTLE hours upon completion. Recent data show that 66% of fourth grade students in the United States read “below proficient” according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), and low-income and minority children fare even worse. Together, we can improve literacy rates for New York's kids. Note: Certain states, school districts, and schools have purchased groups of licenses that entitle their educators access to the course for free or at a discount. If you are unsure whether you are eligible for free or discounted access, please check with a local administrator. If you are not part of a participating state, district, or school you can pay the course fee of $50.00 USD and register as an individual learner at any time. Successful completion of this microcredential prepares you for continued study and to immediately apply Science of Reading techniques in your classroom or with the students you are supporting in your coaching or specialist position.
Credits earned in the completion of this microcredential can be applied toward completion of a related certificate or degree program. It is a building block that gives you a jump start to education and career success.
