Jumpstart your career in firefighting or emergency services with this Firefighter and Emergency Services I microcredential! The first in a two-part microcredential series, this microcredential series is designed to ready you for the academic requirements of being a NYS firefighter (there is a 15-credit course eligibility requirement for the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) exam). This first microcredential provides an introduction to firefighting and emergency services. You will understand National Fire Protection Association standards, current fire protection systems for building construction and fire code. You will also be exposed to the emergency incident command systems which play a vital role in managing a fire scene. To this end, your ability to communicate effectively with those around you is essential in an emergency situation and this microcredential will hone your communication skills too. Finally you will also gain an overview of the three main components of the criminal justice system-police, courts and corrections. Note: A student who holds a valid FF I certification, accredited by the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, can submit the original certificate to the Records Office for validation toward credit for prior learning for part of this microcredential. Firefighter certifications from other States will be accepted upon evaluation. Depending on your prior level of education and experience, successful completion of this microcredential will prepare you to apply to the FDNY or to continue your studies in the Firefighter and Emergency Services II microcredential.
Credits earned in the completion of this microcredential can be applied toward completion of a related certificate or degree program. It is a building block that gives you a jump start to education and career success.
