Are you interested in coaching school athletics? Anyone interested in becoming a coach at the varsity, junior varsity, freshman or middle school levels, who is not already a certified NYS physical education teacher, must complete a sequence of coaching courses as determined by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). This microcredentials provides you with that required instruction. You will build an essential understanding of proven coaching philosophies and techniques as well as gain a fundamental knowledge of anatomy and kinesiology. You will learn to conduct effective program organization and practice planning while becoming skilled in training, team building, motivation and risk management. This microcredential does not include the non-curricular requirements that you must meet. Specifically, NYS also requires fingerprinting, Child Abuse Identification and Reporting and School Violence Prevention and Intervention Workshops, and ongoing concussion training courses, First Aid and CPR. To coach a complex or contact sport you must complete a sport-specific course through the National Federation of State High School Associations. You will be guided to complete the certification process as part of the microcredential. Successful completion of the microcredential and all requirements readies you to apply for your Temporary Coaching License and to begin applying for coaching positions. Note: Taking the optional course would bring the tuition cost for this microcredential to $2,772.
Credits earned in the completion of this microcredential can be applied toward completion of a related certificate or degree program. It is a building block that gives you a jump start to education and career success.
Each campus will confirm final costs. The estimated tuition shown above is based on NYS residency for this institution.
