Take your love of athletics to new heights with this NYS Coaching microcredential! Anyone interested in becoming a coach at the varsity, junior varsity, freshman or middle school levels, who is not already a certified NYS physical education teacher, must complete a sequence of coaching courses as determined by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). This microcredential provides you with that required instruction and more. You will learn the theory and techniques of high-quality coaching, understand team dynamics, management, community and family interactions. With a focus on health science, you will understand essential elements of anatomy, biology and kinesiology. You will complete the Child Abuse Identification Workshop, a School Violence Prevention (SAVE) Workshop, a Harassment, Bullying, Cyber bullying training, a Discrimination in Schools (DASA Anti-Bullying) Workshop, and a Concussion Training Course. You will also complete a First Aid, AED and CPR training. Note that to coach a complex or contact sport you much complete a sport-specific course through the National Federation of State High School Associations. Successful completion of this microcredential and all requirements prepares you for continued study, to apply for your temporary license, and to begin applying for coaching positions.
Credits earned in the completion of this microcredential can be applied toward completion of a related certificate or degree program. It is a building block that gives you a jump start to education and career success.
