The Addiction Services Fundamentals Microcredential prepares students with foundational knowledge and skills essential for entry into the field of addiction services. Students examine the role and responsibilities of the Addictions Counselor, explore the principles and practices that guide effective service delivery, and develop an understanding of the counseling relationship as a framework for supporting individuals affected by substance use and related challenges. Students analyze counseling theories and interventions commonly used in addiction services and apply these concepts through applied learning opportunities. Successful completion of this microcredential readies students to continue their studies in the Human Services or Addiction Studies degree programs and to apply for administrative/client relations positions in centers focused on provision of counseling. As part of this microcredential, students participate in a semester long Service Learning project that provides meaningful applied learning experiences within the community. Through this experience, students strengthen their understanding of the profession while developing practical skills in engagement, communication, professionalism, and intervention. Also, it can be taken over 1 or 2 semesters and can be on campus or web based.
