EKG Technicians and Phlebotomy Technicians are both considered to have very favorable job prospects by the New York State Department of Labor (NYSDOL), with employment for both professions projected to grow by over twenty percent between 2022 and 2032 (https://dol.ny.gov/employment-projections). The EKG Technician course consist of 60 hours of classroom learning and the Phlebotomy Technician course consists of 90 hours of classroom learning. Both courses include a combination of lecture-based instruction and extensive hands-on practice. These courses can be taken either simultaneously or sequentially. Each course leads to a Certificate of Completion from Nassau Community College (NCC), and also prepares students to sit for a nationally recognized Industry Credential through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Those Industry Credentials are the Certified Electrocardiogram Technician (CET) and the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT). Please see https://www.nhanow.com/get-certified for additional information. All NCC Workforce Development courses require that students be at least 17 years old by the start of the course, be able to read and write English proficiently, and have internet and email access. Additionally, for NHA certification, students must either already possess a High School Diploma or Equivalent, or earn one within 12 months of passing their certification exam. Students who successfully earn Certificates of Completion for both the Phlebotomy Technician and the EKG Technician programs can receive credit for MAP 138: EKG & Phlebotomy Procedures (4 credits) at NCC from the Department of Healthcare Administration, Health Information, Medical Coding, Medical Assistant, and Administrative Business Technology. These credits can be used toward either a Medical Assistant Certification or a Medical Assistant Associate of Applied Science (AAS).
