What you'll learn

Coach to win the game and support student health and success! Anyone interested in becoming a coach at the varsity, junior varsity, freshman or middle school levels, who is not already a certified NYS physical education teacher, must complete a sequence of coaching courses as determined by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). This microcredential is designed to provide you with that required academic instruction. You will build an essential understanding of anatomy, kinesiology, sports injury prevention and response, as well as health and nutrition. You will learn effective coaching, team dynamics and team building strategies. You will understand all relevant regulations and practices for risk management. With successful completion of this microcredential, you are on your way to earning your Temporary Coaching license through the New York State Education Department. You must also become Red Cross certified in First Aid and CPR and to coach a complex or contact sport you much complete a sport-specific course through the National Federation of State High School Associations. You will be guided to complete the process as part of the microcredential. Successful completion of this microcredential and all related requirements prepared you for continued study, to apply for your temporary license, and to begin applying for coaching positions.
