NYS Master Teachers from around the state returned to the SUNY Cortland Outdoor Education Center at Raquette Lake this summer to immerse themselves in three days of learning with NYS Master Teacher Program Regional Director for Central New York, Betsey Schuhle.

Southern Tier Master Teachers Lindsey Hendricks in the Windsor Central School District, and Maureen Patterson, in Maine-Endwell Central School District, led the Southern Tier Math Collaborative (STMC) over the course of the 2022-2023 school year and are helping to welcome more participating school districts and expand from the elementary grades to the middle school level in the 2023-2024 school year. The STMC is a peer-to-peer professional learning opportunity focused on a student-centered, constructivist approach to building teacher mathematical communities to support skill development in students.
On September 23, The William H. Miner Agricultural Research Institute welcomed Master Teachers from the North Country region for a day-long professional learning event. The K-12 teachers participated in several labs that they conduct as part of their high school chemistry program and then toured the dairy and equine barns and the Heart's Delight Farm Heritage Exhibit. NYS Master Teacher Program professional learning opportunities often serve to deepen the STEM curricular ties to the local industries, helping students see their lessons in the real world context.

Master Teacher Mary Howard has recently published a terrific new resource book, “Artificial Intelligence to Streamline your Teacher Life”. The book is very aptly named, since it is a concise, easy to use guide to an exploding topic in Artificial Intelligence (AI) known as Chat GPT.

In her 20th year of teaching, Dr. Helfant is organizing her lessons and resources to share with all teachers on a YouTube Channel, Where Science Meets Curiosity. Her most recent video is “How I Bring Storylines into my Chemistry Teaching.”
Storylines help teachers adapt and create curriculum materials for the NYS P-12 Science Learning Standards. Students’ own questions drive their science learning. Hartford Central School District STEAM teacher Kathy Donovan’s lesson “Creating & Learning about the Wood Wide Web” has garnered outstanding feedback from K-12 and higher ed science educators across the United States, elementary level and college level teachers, and the former president of the National Science Teacher Association.
In the 3-minute video, we learn of Mrs. Donovan’s aha moment, expanding her own content knowledge to learn about the mycorrhizal network and how she designed a lesson for her elementary school students. In her 20th year as a science teacher in the West Babylon Union Free School District, Andrea Durbin is truly a life-long learner. She applied and was selected to join the inaugural year of the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) “ Master Teacher of Invention Education Program” (MTIP).
Mrs. Durbin will join selected peers in March to help create a “national network of teacher leaders who will empower educators to foster invention and intellectual property education for their students, who are the next generation of creative thinkers, problem solvers, inventors, innovators, and entrepreneurs."

The U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board are pleased to announce that Sylvia Tellaeche of New York has been selected for the Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Short Term (DAST) Program. Ms. Tellaeche is one of 20 U.S. citizens who will travel as an expert U.S. K–12 educators to participating countries to support projects in schools, teacher training colleges, government ministries, or educational nongovernmental organizations, as identified by U.S. Embassies and Fulbright Commissions.

Two area teachers, one from Alfred-Almond and one from Hornell City Schools, have been designated NYS Master Teachers. New York State has named 214 master teachers to the NYSMTP, and Auburn High School science teacher, Patrick Crawford, is one of them. Crawford, who teaches AP Biology and Biomedical Science, joins three other Auburn HS science teachers – Kathleen Austin, Judith Coye, and Janet Scheffler – currently in the program.
