Students fill comfort bags for SUNY's Got Your Back.
What is SUNY's Got Your Back?

About SUNY’s Got Your Back

Every day, adults and children seek assistance from hospitals, law enforcement, and non-profits- often with little more than the clothes they are wearing. On April 4, 2016, the State University of New York launched SUNY’s Got Your Back to assemble comfort bags for survivors of sexual and interpersonal violence across the Empire State. This initiative not only provides survivors with much-needed care items, but also helps alleviate the costs taken on by shelters, hospitals, and other response organizations.

The comfort bags are assembled across all 64 SUNY campuses by students and staff, where they are educated about sexual and interpersonal violence. The bags are then delivered for free to agencies across New York State so they can be distributed to survivors of crime and violence.

Initially proposed as a year-long project with the goal of 2016 bags, the program has far surpassed this goal with over 100,000 bags assembled. We have partnered with the PGA Tour, Dick’s Sporting Goods, the Aurora Games, the NY Islanders, and many more!

Many SUNY colleges in the past ran programs to collect comfort bags – bags filled with personal care items one would need when they arrive at a shelter or hospital. SUNY’s Got Your Back has taken that work to scale. Teaming with the Office of Victim Services, The New York State Coalition Against Sexual Assault (NYSCASA), the New York State Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NYSCADV), and The New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault have assembled bags at every SUNY campus and at events across New York State.
