With a significant portfolio dedicated to workforce development, SUNY is helping both employers and students to be key parts of New York's economic future. SUNY colleges offer credit and non-credit training to prepare workers to enter or grow in positions within their region. Colleges welcome the opportunity to partner with employers to ensure curriculum is relevant.

Workforce Development Training

SUNY's community colleges offer extensive workforce development training customized for employers to upskill their workforce. Funding is available and accessed by colleges to significantly reduce the cost. Over the past five years, more than 51,500 employees have been trained at approximately 500 employers throughout the state.

Apprenticeship Programs at SUNY

Partnering with the business community, NYS Department of Labor (NYSDOL) and US Department of Labor, SUNY coordinates activities to expand apprenticeship throughout New York in a variety of sectors including advanced manufacturing, healthcare, and other non-construction sectors. Thirty-three SUNY colleges have participated in the program with over 2,800 individuals approved for support to pursue pre-apprenticeship or apprenticeship training.

Education Workforce Investment

New York State seeks to rebuild its teacher workforce – including through recruiting and retaining teachers throughout the state to resolve the ongoing teacher shortage. The Alternative Teacher Certification Program and the Upskilling Paraprofessionals Program will provide incentives for teachers, address student needs, and create a robust pipeline of future educators to ensure a shortage never again threatens opportunities for families and children.

SUNY Internship Program

This program seeks plans from SUNY community colleges to provide support for students participating in internship programs. Through an allocation methodology, funds will be distributed to SUNY community colleges to support SUNY students in overcoming barriers that may prevent student participation in these learning experiences. These wrap around services could include but are not limited to tuition, stipends, transportation, child care, etc.

Through the Future of Work Centers (formerly Job Linkage) funding is provided to develop programs at SUNY’s community colleges to address regional workforce demands.
