Chancellor King Launches 2023 Educational Opportunity Program Summer Academy With Visit to Purchase College

About 4,000 First Year EOP Students Will Visit SUNY Campuses In the Coming Weeks to Prepare for Fall 2023 Semester

Purchase, NY – State University of New York Chancellor John B. King, Jr. today announced the launch of the 2023 Educational Opportunity Program Summer Academy across SUNY campuses during his visit to Purchase College. There he was joined by Assemblymember Chris Burdick, SUNY Board Trustee Keith Landa, and Purchase College President Milagros “Milly” Peña, as well as the faculty and staff who welcomed 40 students to the campus.
In the coming weeks approximately 4,000 first year EOP students will spend time on SUNY campuses as they prepare for the Fall 2023 Semester. Under the leadership of Governor Kathy Hochul with significant support from the state legislature, EOP continues to provide students—most the first from their families to go to college—with comprehensive services and personalized support. The 2024 enacted budget includes nearly $44 million to ensure the success of the program for SUNY EOP students.
“I am thrilled to help President Peña and the Purchase College community welcome the first 2023 class of our EOP students to SUNY as they start their academic journey and begin to realize what they can get out of college. EOP was created more than 50 years ago to provide an equitable and affordable education to students from low-income households, and it continues to propel promising students to a college degree and greater social mobility for themselves and their families,” said SUNY Chancellor King. “My thanks to Governor Hochul, and the New York State Legislature including Leader Stewart-Cousins, Speaker Heastie, and Assemblymember Chris Burdick (who joined us today), for their continued support of not only SUNY but our EOP program.”
SUNY Board Trustee Keith Landa, who spoke with incoming EOP students, said, “As an active member of the Purchase College community since 2008, it is a privilege to meet with our new students during the summer academy. EOP is an intensive experience and one that sets up our students for success in college. I am in awe of the faculty and staff who create this program, and inspired by our students who come here eager to start their studies and be a part of this welcoming academic environment.”
Purchase College President Peña said, "As a first-generation college graduate myself, I know what it’s like to have to forge a path and find my own way on a college campus. Many of our EOP students will be doing this as well, starting at the summer academy today. I'm proud of our incoming EOP class for taking this first step in their academic journey. As a college with a robust EOP program, we know the importance of providing access to hands-on support and mentorship, both of which are invaluable in helping students thrive both on campus and after graduation."
Each summer at Purchase College, incoming EOP first-year students participate in a five-week residential experience on the campus, normally beginning in July and ending in early August. The full cost of tuition, fees, room and board, and books is paid for through an EOP grant. Small classroom instruction is offered to enrich and provide a better start for university courses that students will take in the fall semester.
Students are also exposed to numerous academic and nonacademic success skills, extensive individual and group counseling sessions, and personal and educational advisement. Other priorities during the summer include in-depth study skill enrichment and career awareness sessions. Some campuses offer the students the opportunity to earn credits toward graduation during the summer program.
