Vice Chancellor Academic Programs Policy and Planning (MP)

Positions in this family are responsible for coordinating the many and complex aspects of the educational and educationally-related programs of the State University System.
VICE CHANCELLOR FOR ACADEMIC PROGRAMS POLICY AND PLANNING is responsible to the Chancellor for the preparation and implementation of policies, plans, new approaches and innovative efforts in the area of academic programs for the University system. Supervises the staff in the offices in the organizational area of Academic Programs: Graduate Education and Research, Undergraduate Education, Vocational and Technical Education, Health Sciences and Health-Related Professional Education, Arts and Cultural Affairs, International Programs, Educational Development, University Press, Library Services, the New York Network and the Sea Grant Program.
- coordinates the comprehensive academic program of the State University system;
- supervises the development of policy relating to academic programs, including those policies and decisions which must be approved by the Board of Trustees;
- acts as chief academic liaison to the Trustees, reviewing before submission all recommendations with academic implications;
- assures proper application and supervision of the Policies of the Board of Trustees, the Education Law, the Rules of the Board of Regents, the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education and other statutes and related matters;
- when appropriate, communicates policy decisions and information to Presidents of the State University campuses;
- acts as academic advisor to campus Presidents and academic vice presidents, through telephone calls, correspondence, and personal meetings;
- conducts correspondence as required with legislators, citizens, students, and faculty, among others;
- fosters academic program regionalism within the University and with other public and private Colleges and Universities;
- visits campuses as often as possible to provide closer relationship between System Administration and campuses;
- works in close cooperation with the campus officers, other System Administration offices, the State Education Department, and the Division of the Budget;
- supervises the continuing review of existing academic programs, the review and approval of proposed new programs by the appropriate Provost or Provosts and their registration by the State Education Department;
- reviews and makes recommendations on budgets for campuses and for Central Staff academic program offices;
- advises generally and particularly on academic implications relating to campus facility development, campus personnel matters, campus program budgets, campus-community relations and public relations;
- serves as a member of a number of extra-university committees and associations, and frequently chairs and attends other meetings and conferences;
- may serve as a System Staff Senator in the State University Faculty Senate;
- serves as a member of the Executive Committee and advisor to the Chancellor on matters involving not only academic programs but also the total University system.
Preferred Qualifications:
A doctorate and several years of high level and wide-ranging teaching and academic administrative and managerial experience.
