Vice Chancellor for University Relations (MP)
This title is in the unclassified service and is designated Managerial/Confidential. Appointees to Managerial/Confidential titles serve at the pleasure of the chief administrative officer and are not represented for collective negotiations.
Positions in this area are concerned principally with improving communications and relations with both the university's internal and external constituencies in order to insure university accountability for its activities, make well-known its educational opportunities, and make understandable its plans and policies. As such, University Affairs is a direct public service function.
- VICE CHANCELLOR FOR UNIVERSITY RELATIONS, directs a university affairs program comprised of three main operations: communications, which interprets and communicates through its own publications and/or the commercial news media important university developments to all university constituencies--internally, the Board of Trustees, the Central Administration, College Councils, and the students, faculty and administration of the university's 72 campuses, and, externally, all New York residents generally, including university alumni, parents of university students, State legislators and U.S. Congressmen from New York;
- governmental relations, which develops an ongoing liaison between the university and Federal, State and local government officials;
- initiates and coordinates the development of legislative proposals for consideration by the Board of Trustees;
- oversees the functions of the Washington, D.C. office of the university, which helps faculty in their efforts to obtain Federal research grants; and,
- campus relations, which maintains continuing personal relations between the university and four distinct constituencies, of the university: faculty, students, college councils and alumni, assuring university liaison with all four groups for the purpose of enhancing efforts to progress in matters of mutual concern;
- coordinates program efforts with other System Administration offices and with the campuses, including institutions in the private sector of higher education;
- chairs or serves on many System Administration committees.
Preferred Qualifications:
A doctorate and several years of very significant high-level faculty, administrative and managerial experience in higher education.
