T.H. Midwifery Director (SL6)

This title is in the unclassified service and in the SUNY Professional Services Negotiating Unit.

This family represents positions that are both clinical and administrative. The 24 hour on-call Nurse Midwifery Service provides high ' quality, full-scope professional practice with medical supervision/consultation and primary care for adolescents, women, infants and related men as part of a maternity, newborn and/or family planning health prevention/maintenance service.

• Assume leadership for the total operation of the Midwifery Service.
• In conjunction with the Chair of the Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology and the Director of Obstetrics, establish and maintain current standards/policy for the provision of Midwifery Services which are in compliance with University Hospital Policies and procedures;local, state and federal regulations;mandatory JCAH Standards and the National Standards for the Practice of Nurse-Midwifery (1987) (as defined by the American College of Nurse Midwives).
• Maintain a full scope clinical practice in order to assess on-going needs of service, evaluate staff in clinical area and determine educational needs.
• Coordinate development of in-service programs and monitor staff completion of continuing education requirements.
• Function independently in the preparation and submission of the annual budget;
• plan and evaluate changes and current needs in Hospital design, equipment and supplies for the Midwifery Service.
• Develop, implement and maintain a Quality Assurance Program.
• Coordinate patient and family life education programs in preparation for childbirth, contraception, parenthood and infant Care.
• Serve on center-wide policy-making committees;
• represent Midwifery Service in incident investigations, determination of disciplinary actions, grievance responses and responses to external regulatory agencies.
• Promote and maintain effective working relationships among midwives and other discipline of the health care team, patient/clients and the general public.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree in health related field; New York State R.N. license; Certification by the American College of Nurse Midwives, or its equivalent; New York State Midwifery Permit; Five to seven years post licensure experience to include two years progressive management/supervisory experience.
