T.H. Director of Respiratory Therapy (SL5)

This title is in the unclassified service and in the SUNY Professional Services Negotiating Unit. This title is in Appendix A of the SUNY Policies of the Board of Trustees and, as a consequence, incumbents serving in this title are not eligible for permanent appointment (tenure), but, instead receive five year renewable term appointments.

The positions in this job family assist the physician in determining and maintaining good ventilation status on life support systems for patients who are in need of therapy due to distress or post-operative surgery. They provide therapy, maintain proper settings of equipment in order to obtain acceptable Arterial Blood Gasses, and maintain all equipment for infection control purposes. They plan an active role in performing Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in a Code Blue situation.

• Responsible for the overall direction of respiratory care services including departmental materials management inclusive of ordering, receiving, storage and distribution as well as procedures which require cost containment review, long-term planning and budgeting.
• Develops budget and is responsible and accountable to Hospital Administration for achieving budgetary targets.
• Oversees the selection and general direction of respiratory care personnel;
• develops policies governing the use and availability of respiratory care services;
• maintains department within current state, federal and local regulation requirements;
• implements appropriate measures to control the spread of infections;
• develops programs for the orientation of in-service education of technical and supportive respiratory care personnel;
• develops budgets and scheduling of services, and maintains records and reports.
• Consults with and instructs physicians, nurses, technicians, and students, and promotes liaison between the department and other services in the hospital;
• oversees the department's coordination and participation in conferences concerning patients receiving therapy;
• conducts patient rounds to observe patient response, review orders, records, use of apparatus, etc.
• Participates in ongoing hospital committees (i.e., Quality Assurance, Safety), and maintains current knowledge of literature and references regarding respiratory services.
• Provides instruction to medical and nursing staff, health related professions staff and students.

Preferred Qualifications:

BS, RRT. Seven years related experience to include two years in a supervisory/administrative capacity.
