T.H. Clinical Nutritionist II (SL3)

This title is in the unclassified service and in the SUNY Professional Services Negotiating Unit.

This title family obtains diet history and assesses nutritional status of patients, including renal failure, diabetic and cirrhotic patients and other patients requiring special diets, and instructs patients and families on required diet therapy.

• Develops and implements nutritional care plan based on assessment of nutritional needs, current nutrition-related problems and psycho-social status;
• consults with physicians and other health-care professionals concerning patient's nutritional care with recommendation for appropriate nutritional therapy;
• counsels individuals and families in nutritional principles, meal planning, nutritional supplement or special products selection, reviews laboratory values, conducts anthropometric measurements and other objective nutritional status (i.e. nitrogen balance study to assess nutritional status);
• refers patient to other professionals for proper financial assistance and psychosocial intervention;
• communicates nutritional problems, diet history and nutritional data through documentation to meet accreditation and regulatory agencies standards.
• Participates in patient care meetings, other health care team rounds, conferences and assigned committees;
• provide in-depth nutritional evaluation and follow up care for high risk patients requiring aggressive nutritional intervention;
• delivers lectures on nutrition to Medical & Allied Health Staff and students as requested;
• serves as nutrition person for individuals in communities seeking qualified nutrition information in given area of expertise.
• Designs and develops educational materials to assist in patient education and in management of diet related problems;
• guides and supervises program and dietetic personnel;
• participates in the development, review and updating of nutrition policies and procedures relative to the research program;
• studies and analyzes recent scientific literature in nutrition for the development of research projects;
• interprets, evaluates and utilizes pertinent current research relating to nutritional care;
• researches and writes hospital diet manual, develops experimental diets as requested by medical staff;
• writes and publishes research results.
• Monitors food service in compliance with dietary description and quality standard.
• Evaluate patient's acceptance;
• plans and participates in quality assurance studies for nutritional services;
• coordinates and integrates clinical and administrative aspects of dietetics to provide quality nutritional care.
• Provides supervision for the maintenance of therapeutic accuracy, the nutritional care plan and the formulation of supplemental feeding implemented by Diet Technician.
• Attends professional meetings or continuing educational programs for maintaining registration status and clinical specialty.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree. Registered Dietitian. Five years of hospital experience in clinical dietetics.
