Environmental Health Officer (SL4)

This title is in the unclassified service and in the SUNY Professional Services Negotiating Unit. This title is in Appendix A of the SUNY Policies of the Board of Trustees and, as a consequence, incumbents serving in this title are not eligible for permanent appointment (tenure), but, instead receive five year renewable term appointments.

At a Campus this position is responsible for identifying hazards to personal health, determining the severity of existing hazards, establishing controls for preventing accidents, determining if work environments are in compliance with applicable occupational safety and health laws.

Typical responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• administering, monitoring and presenting accident prevention programs including direct liaison with injured persons, their legal representatives, the Personnel Department and, frequently, the University Counsel's Office;
• formulating statistics regarding injuries to faculty, staff and students for the purpose of evaluating types of injuries, place of occurrence, and number of injuries, to be used in developing programs or in improving existing programs;
• conducting in-service training of faculty, staff and students in the safe use of equipment and supplies and in various health and safety topics such as AIDS, asbestos, noise, hepatitis;
• prepares training materials, develops general health and safety informational and job specific pamphlets;
• produces newsletters, maintains appropriate training records;
• planning and conducting safety meetings for employees and students to orient such parties to the provisions of laws and its relation to their personal rights;
• assisting in the implementation and monitoring of the Occupational Safety and Health Act provisions as promulgated by the NYS Labor Department, thus ensuring compliance with safety codes, construction regulations and health standards;
• performing air and substance sampling for field and laboratory tests;
• writing activity reports;
• monitoring ongoing programs; and
• consulting with university, industrial or governmental contemporaries.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in industrial hygiene or one of the physical sciences. Three years experience as an environmental health and safety professional.
