Chief of Police (MP)
This title is in the unclassified service and is designated Managerial/Confidential. Appointees to Managerial/Confidential titles serve at the pleasure of the chief administrative officer and are not represented for collective negotiations. This title replaced the title Director of Campus Public Safety in 2005.
Positions in this family are concerned with the administration of the police, security and safety functions at a campus in order to assure a proper atmosphere for the pursuit of the educational objectives of the campus community. The primary responsibilities of these positions are to supervise the daily activities of the university police/security force, to develop training programs for the university police/security personnel, and to provide liaison between the campus university police/security office and various outside agencies.
CHIEF OF POLICE (MP), is responsible for the proper administration and efficient operation of university police/secuity forces and sometimes safety activities at a campus.
- Supervises the maintenance of law and order on campus and the enforcement of Federal, State, and local laws as well as the rules and regulations of SUNY and the campus;
- develops appropriate preventive and security techniques to control crimes on campus;
- reviews all reports submitted by university police personnel concerning incidents and investigations on campus;
- acts as a liaison with Federal, State, and local law enforcement officials and agencies to assure a mutual understanding of policies;
- supervises the scheduling of personnel in the university police force to assure their efficient deployment;
- acts as a liaison with the SUNY System Administration Coordinator of University Police services in matters concerning recruitment, training and deployment of university police personnel;
- submits information concerning prospective university police employees to the System Administration Coordinator of University Police/Security for an appropriate background investigation prior to employment;
- ensures that each university police employee receives basic and in-service training as required;
- maintains liaison with the campus Office of Student Affairs to assure the accomplishment of university objectives in relation to the University Police Office;
- administers a program of campus safety as directed by the office of the Coordinator of University Police/Security.
Preferred Qualifications:
A minimum of two years of formal training beyond the high school level, with a Bachelor's degree preferred; significant experience in police administration or campus security work
