Workforce Pell at SUNY

Workforce Pell at SUNY

The new federal Workforce Pell law takes effect July 1, 2026, making short-term, career-focused programs across the SUNY System affordable for more New Yorkers.

SUNY System Administration and SUNY campuses are preparing to implement this new legislation and make New Yorkers aware of this opportunity.

What is Workforce Pell?

Workforce Pell expands federal Pell Grant eligibility to cover certain short-term job training programs at SUNY campuses across New York State.

This new assistance helps New Yorkers to pay for short-term programs — lasting just weeks or months — that lead directly to in-demand jobs.

What does it cover?

Workforce Pell covers a portion of the total program cost. The actual award will vary depending on your financial need as determined by the FAFSA and the length of your educational program.

Like the Federal Pell Grant, Workforce Pell Grants are generally applied to the tuition costs of the program. It can also be used to cover:

  • Required education fees
  • Textbooks and supplies
  • Transportation
  • Child care and other related educational expenses

What programs are eligible?

Eligible Workforce Pell programs are designed to quickly prepare students for in-demand jobs. Every eligible program meets the following criteria:

  • Between 8 and 14 weeks long
  • Aligned with a high-skill, high-wage, or in-demand job or industry
  • Meets verified job placement rate of 70% or higher, meaning 70% of students who complete the program successfully transition to a job
  • Leads to a credit-bearing college program for those who may want to continue their education
