Web Policy

Purpose

The purpose of the SUNY Web Site is to support SUNY campuses by providing interactive electronic communication with our various audiences.  These audiences include other campuses, students, employees, parents, affiliated organizations and businesses.

Anything published on suny.edu represents SUNY, and therefore must be developed carefully and maintained to the highest professional standards. It must be accurate, grammatically correct, consistent, up-to-date, useful, concise, user friendly, graphically well-designed and compliant with applicable standards.

Responsibility

The development and maintenance of Web sites under suny.edu are based on a distributed model of responsibility, with shared accountability and opportunity.

The Administrative Systems / Web Shared Services department provides assistance to campuses, individual offices and departments within several areas related to the Web. The areas of responsibility break down as follows:

Clients (Campuses, Individual Offices, and Departments):

• Provide and maintain site content, ensuring accuracy and consistency
• Review the Web site quarterly
• Adhere to the NYS Mandatory Technology Standards
• Adhere to the SUNY Web Standards
• Adhere to W3C Standards

Administrative Systems/Web Shared Services:

• Serve as a consultant for new and existing Web pages
• Review and monitor all Web sites for standards compliance at least semi-annually
• Discover and remove any unsecured Personal Identification Information
• Use AccVerify/NYS Verification Software to ensure that accessibility standards are followed
• Use Nexpose software to manage and report any vulnerabilities
• Support and maintain the OmniUpdate content management system
• Provide and maintain the approved templates for most Web sites
• Provide Web Graphic Design services
• Provide and maintain all policies, standards, and guidelines

Applicable Standards

All Web sites under suny.edu must comply with the following standards:

• NYS Information Technology Standards: http://www.cio.ny.gov/tables/technologypolicyindex.htm
  • NYS-P08-005, which governs web accessibility, references Federal Section 508 standards, sections 1194.22 and 1194.31.
• W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 http://www.w3.org/

All users should be familiar with these standards before publishing a Web site. Assistance in understanding these standards and testing for compliance can be obtained from Administrative Systems/Web Shared Services.
