SUNY to Co-Sponsor Annual New York State Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Observance

Schenectady County Community College Vocal Chamber Ensemble Among Event Performers
Albany – The State University of New York will again co-sponsor the Annual New York State Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Observance on Monday, Jan. 16, beginning at 9:45 a.m. at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany, N.Y.
SUNY Board of Trustees Chairman H. Carl McCall, the first African American to be elected comptroller of New York State, will be the featured speaker during the observance. He will be introduced by SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher, who will also deliver brief remarks.
“At SUNY, we share Dr. King’s dream to help all people reach their full potential and we work every day to make that possible for all New Yorkers,” said Chairman McCall. “We strive not only to educate, but to instill the ‘intelligence plus character’ that Dr. King once called the goal of education.”
“SUNY is committed to keeping Dr. King’s dream alive by ensuring access to an education of the highest quality for students from all walks of life,” said Chancellor Zimpher. “It is a privilege to be a part of this annual event and to join New York as it honors a man who has truly served as an inspiration for generations.”
Additionally, the Schenectady County Community College Vocal Chamber Ensemble will perform “I Can Tell the World,” under the direction of Conductor Dr. Yiping Wu.
SCCC President Dr. Quintin B. Bullock said, “We are excited to be a part of this important celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and celebrate with the community, New York State officials, Chairman McCall and Chancellor Zimpher. Our Vocal Chamber Ensemble is eager to help us all lift our hearts and spirits in honor of Dr. King’s enduring legacy of inspiration and hope.”
Through SUNY’s participation in the live satellite broadcast and partnership with cable television systems, millions of citizens throughout New York State are also able to view this annual memorial observance. This year’s program will be broadcast live from 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m., on television stations throughout New York State and neighboring states, compliments of SUNY and New York Network.
