Albany and New York, NY
– State University of New York Chancellor John B. King Jr. and New York City Public Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos issued a joint letter to graduating NYC Public Schools seniors and their families reminding students to apply to SUNY during Free Application Weeks. SUNY will waive up to five application fees per student from Oct. 21 through Nov. 3.

The letter also urges students to obtain all applicable federal financial aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA application opens later this year. All NYCPS students have access to in-person and remote advising in the 6th through 12th grades. Students should schedule a meeting with their school counselor to understand their higher education options at SUNY that connect with their desired career choices.

SUNY and NYCPS are committed to putting students on a path to economic security through a rewarding career aligned with their passion and purpose. SUNY is a strong partner of FutureReadyNYC, part of the larger NYCPS Student Pathways Initiative that provides career-connected learning, work experience, early college credit or industry recognized credentials and personalized advising support. Last fall, SUNY mailed over 60,000 personalized letters to graduating New York City high school students encouraging them to review their college options and apply to SUNY. About 41,000 students from the five boroughs attend a SUNY college or university each year.

In addition to opening free application weeks this fall, SUNY waives application fees for students from 412 New York City high schools all year due to a waiver for high-need high schools. Students may visit suny.edu/apply to learn more.

"There is a place at SUNY for New York City Public Schools seniors, and we are excited to help you find an excellent, affordable SUNY campus committed to your success," said SUNY Chancellor King. "Whether a student from the city wants to stay close to home or explore other parts of the state, SUNY has 64 incredible options for you, and we are ready to welcome you to one of our campuses next fall."

New York City Public Schools Chancellor Aviles-Ramos said, "Applying to college is an important step toward a brighter future, and we want every NYC high school student to take advantage of the opportunities available to them. SUNY's Free Application Weeks remove one of the first financial barriers students face, making it easier for more of our young people to explore affordable higher education options. This is a critical moment to plan for your future, and we encourage students to apply, ask questions, and envision the possibilities."

The potential savings for each student add up to $250, removing an early barrier to accessing the affordable higher education SUNY provides. At $7,070 per year, SUNY is an exceptional value for students and families. In addition, 52% of New York State resident full-time SUNY students attend tuition-free thanks to federal, state, and institutional financial aid. Many families qualify for tuition support through New York State's Tuition Assistance Program and Excelsior Scholarship. High school seniors may apply here now.
