Smaller academic credentials that quickly move skilled individuals into in-demand fields—by educating new workers and upskilling incumbent workers—are emerging as an essential component of growing and strengthening any state economy and fueling any emerging workforce.
Doing this work in a way that provides pathways for credential completers to add additional credentials while working, to position them for internal advancement and economic mobility, is a hallmark of SUNY’s award-winning microcredential program.
SUNY has worked with hundreds of businesses, P-12 school districts, community partners, and, more recently, New York State agencies, to develop microcredentials to meet workforce needs.
Microcredentials are low-risk, high reward tools that you can use in several ways:
Close the skill gap
Support recruitment & retention
Support employee growth
Expand your benefits program
Consider microcredential graduates for existing entry level and advanced positions as well as for paid internships and promotions. Microcredential completers are self-motivated, having made a commitment to their own professional development and to your industry. Some have degrees, for others, the microcredential is their first college experience. Some have years of relevant work experience, some are just starting out. But all have registered for a microcredential as a way to move forward and advance—positioning themselves to continue their education while working for you. When you see a SUNY microcredential listed on a resume, or a prospective employee sends you a digital badge (a weblink with details) for their SUNY microcredential in advance of their interview, know that it comes with the backing of SUNY.
SUNY will work with your business, organization, state agency or P-12 district to revise or create new microcredentials to meet your needs for creating a new pipeline of employees, upskilling existing employees, and/or adding specialized or foundational skills for your staff.
Consider making SUNY microcredentials approved education for your existing professional learning or tuition reimbursement program.
“At least 8 out of 10 employees say that having access to best-in-class learning and development opportunities would increase their engagement, job satisfaction, motivation at work, and likelihood of staying at their company. And nearly all Gen Z employees - 97% or more - say these outcomes would increase for them. In fact, 84% of Gen Z say L&D opportunities and benefits are “just as” (54%) or “more” (30%) valuable than a promotion or title change.”
