T.H. Respiratory Therapist II (SL3)
This title is in the unclassified service and in the SUNY Professional Services Negotiating Unit.
The positions in this job family assist the physician in determining and maintaining good ventilation status on life support systems for patients who are in need of therapy due to distress or post-operative surgery. They provide therapy, maintain proper settings of equipment in order to obtain acceptable Arterial Blood Gasses, and maintain all equipment for infection control purposes. They plan an active role in performing Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in a Code Blue situation.
- Provides respiratory care to patients through an assigned shift;
- provides respiratory care for acute patients under the direction of a physician including (but not limited to) drawing blood for gas analysis and adjustment of ventilators or other equipment within the limits of the physician's instructions;
- ensures that all equipment is operating properly and the return and proper storage of any equipment which is no longer required;
- Maintains proper patient records;
- assists physicians in ventilating patients, including responding to all cardiac arrest calls;
- explains the use of equipment to the patient and assists them in the use of IPPB devises.
- Provides direction for medical staff in caring for patients with respiratory problems;
- cleans, transports, disinfects and sterilizes all equipment in accordance with infection control guidelines, determining its availability for patient use as prescribed.
- Participates in the orientation of all new Respiratory Therapy staff and may provide instruction to medical staff, residents and students;
- participates in in-depth in-service.
- Incumbents receive their assignments and general supervision from Respiratory Therapist III's and attending physicians.
- Provides supervision to subordinates.
Preferred Qualifications:
AAS in RT or certificate of completion from AMA approved RT level program, CRTT, registry eligible and two years post-AAS clinical acute care experience required.
