T.H. Physicians Assistant I (SL5)
This title is in the unclassified service and in the SUNY Professional Services Negotiating Unit.
The professionals who function in this group are specially trained in the diagnosis and treatment of commonly encountered medical problems. They thereby extend the physician's capacity to provide medical care, freeing the physician to deal with more complex and emergent issues.
Functions as Physician Assistant in all aspects of patient care, including pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative activities:
- performs routine history and physical examinations;
- documents appropriate pre-operative orders;
- draws routine blood tests and takes samples for blood gas determinations;
- starts IV lines as needed.
- Scrubs and assists on all types of cardiac surgical procedures, including saphenous vein excision, wound closure and cannulation, under close supervision of Attending staff.
- Takes care of patients in Open Heart ICU, Neurology, Oncology Step-Down Unit and patient floors;
- prescribes and adjusts medications;
- removes drainage tubes;
- inserts IV catheters;
- draws blood tests.
- Responsible for timely and appropriate documentation, including progress notes and orders.
- Attends appropriate conferences and rounds;
- provides instruction to graduate students, and incoming house staff.
- Specific lines of supervision are provided by Physicians.
- May supervise subordinates.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree, NYS license. Minimum of two years in dealing with primary medical care or three years in a general practice. Physician's Assistant experience in surgical and/or intensive care setting preferred.
