T.H. Open Heart Perfusionist (SL5)
This title is in the unclassified service and in the SUNY Professional Services Negotiating Unit.
The positions in the perfusion family function as teams to set up, maintain and operate the cardio-pulmonary and related equipment which regulates the passage of blood or other fluid through a vascular bed during and after open-heart surgery.
- Works independently under the general supervision of the MD.
- Operates cardiopulmonary by-pass equipment that is necessary for all surgical correction of various cardiac and vascular abnormalities;
- recognizes and instantaneously reacts to correct problems that may develop within the cardiopulmonary circuit.
- Must have sufficient knowledge and understanding of surgical procedures in process and understand what the surgeon is doing technically with regard to what problems may occur within the conduct of perfusion.
- Maintains supplies and equipment;
- supervises perfusionist assistant and students;
- gives in-service education instruction to medical staff and students.
Preferred Qualifications:
AAS, eligible for Board certification. One to two years on the job related experience.
