T.H. Midwife I (SL5)
This title is in the unclassified service and in the SUNY Professional Services Negotiating Unit.
This family represents positions that are both clinical and administrative. The 24 hour on-call Nurse Midwifery Service provides high ' quality, full-scope professional practice with medical supervision/consultation and primary care for adolescents, women, infants and related men as part of a maternity, newborn and/or family planning health prevention/maintenance service.
Incumbents of this position function as primary care specialists in the care of women throughout the childbearing cycle: pregnancy, labor and delivery, postpartum, infant care, family planning and routine gynecology.
- Perform routine medical and family history and physical examinations for the prenatal, the laboring, and the postpartum/family planning patient and their related men and infants.
- Write orders for patient care including diet, physical activity and prescribed medications;
- admit and discharge maternity patients.
- Determine and conduct necessary laboratory procedures.
- Plan and provide continuing health supervision and education.
- Perform non-stress testing, stress testing (oxytoxin and breast stimulation);
- draws (routine) blood tests, start intravenous infusions;
- perform artificial rupture of membranes as indicated;
- apply the external and internal fetal monitor.
- Monitor the progress of labor through assessment of contraction patterns, patient response and periodic vaginal examination.
- Initiate referrals when complications are diagnosed, as appropriate.
- Perform normal spontaneous vaginal deliveries, episiotomies and repairs, pudendal block and local infiltration anesthesia, resuscitation and evaluation of the newborn;
- make postpartum rounds, write necessary medical orders and consult with physician after assessment of medical problems.
- Does newborn screening examination.
- Evaluate health status and discuss with client and partner the options and preference of the methods of contraception or child spacing.
- Prescribe and initiate chosen method of contraceptives and supervise continued use and education.
Responsible for appropriate documentation, including progress notes and orders for all services provided, attend case conferences and rounds and provide instruction to midwifery, medical and nursing students.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelors or Masters Degree in health related field preferred; one or more years in Nurse-Midwifery practice; New York State R.N. license; New York State Midwifery Permit; Certification by the American College of Nurse Midwives or its equivalent.
