Director of Student Activities/Union (SL5)
This title is in the unclassified service and in the SUNY Professional Services Negotiating Unit.
Positions in this series are involved in the administration and the operation of student unions, centers, and the services they offer to the campus community and/or an activities program which is carried on either within the student union or on the campus generally. Incumbents of these positions must have a thorough awareness of the social, recreational, and educational needs of students in order to provide a comprehensive program of extra curricular activities enriching the educational experience of the students.
Plans and directs the management and program of the student union to ensure its efficient and proper use as an important educational resource of the college. The scope of the activities and the operation should be comprehensive and significant in size.
- Incumbent formulates policies and regulations concerning the use of the student union by students, faculty, staff and the community;
- approves and supervises the scheduling and use of various campus facilities for co-curricular activities;
- coordinates student union services;
- provides managerial and administrative support for programs both within and outside the student union;
- supervises professional, clerical, and support staff;
- manages the fiscal affairs of the student union, student activities, and related areas;
- supervises the planning, organizing, and functioning Of Various co-curricular activities.
- The incumbent frequently serves as the administrative representative and advisor to the student government;
- formulates policy in consultation with students, faculty and staff members as it relates to the activities program;
- supervises and enforces policies related to the recognition and operation of student organizations including SUNY Board of Trustees policies, campus regulations and other federal, state, and local laws;
- publishes various calendars, handbooks and other newsletters to inform the campus community of college activities.
- Incumbent often has primary responsibility for other related functions including orientation, intramurals and recreation, conferences, cultural affairs, Greek affairs, major campus events such as Homecoming and Parents Weekend, convocations, volunteer services, leadership training and development, and commuter services.
Preferred Qualifications:
A Master's Degree, preferably in student personnel or related area, with 5-7 years of progressive experience in the management and administration of a student union or student activities program.
