This title is in the unclassified service and in the SUNY Professional Services Negotiating Unit.

Positions in this series are concerned with the administration of the training ship during the summer sea session of the Maritime College also serving as members of the academic staff or administration during the regular academic year.

The Chief Engineer is found exclusively on the Maritime Academy training ship. The incumbent is responsible for the maintenance and operation of all ship's machinery (power plant). He/She acts as second in command, reporting to the Commanding Officer of the training ship. Typical duties include, but are not limited to:

Preferred Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree and possession of a U.S. Coast Guard Chief Engineer of Steam Vessels License with unlimited horse power or a USCG License as Third Assistant Engineer (motor) and the requisite experience to comply with General order Number 87, Title 46 U.S. Code. In addition, military experience is highly desirable.
