Hispanic Leadership Institute Fellowship

The SUNY Hispanic Leadership Institute (HLI) is an in-depth and rigorous program that will require a significant investment of the Fellow's time and commitment. HLI is a hybrid program and requires Fellows to attend all scheduled meetings, sessions, webinars, and leadership retreats, as well as completing all assigned tasks. Participation in the HLI will also require time away from the Fellow's workplace. To be successful, participants must have the support from their campus leadership, including their direct supervisor.

Since its inception in 2017, there have been seven cohorts for a total of 60 SUNY professionals and Faculty who have completed the six-month HLI program. The Fellows represent 27 SUNY campuses from all four sectors and System Administration and a wide variety of areas of the university and positions.

The HLI six-month curriculum begins in January and ends in June, and includes, but is not limited to:

HLI covers the costs for all meetings, materials, speakers, etc. HLI also covers lodging, breakfast, and lunch for meetings, if and when required. However, each participant is responsible to cover the cost of their transportation and evening meals; this may/will require some level of financial support from the participant's institution.

How to Apply?

The application process is all electronic via the Hispanic Leadership Institute Nomination and Application portals. The process includes four main steps: Nomination via portal, Application via portal, Selection by the HLI Steering Committee and Acceptance by the HLI candidate.

The first step is to be nominated by the campus president, provost, vice president or dean. To nominate a colleague for the SUNY HLI Fellowship, the Nominator needs to complete the form available in the Hispanic Leadership Institute Nomination Submission Portal and upload a letter of recommendation.  The nomination and Letter of Recommendation cannot be submitted by the Nominee directly.

The Nominations deadline is August 31, 2023..

Once the nomination is received via the portal, Nominees will receive an email with instructions to complete the HLI application and a link to the Hispanic Leadership Institute Application Submission Portal.

Nominees will be prompted to use the SUNY Sign In to enter the portal. Follow the instructions provided to complete the questions, provide the information and submit the additional materials requested.  Incomplete applications will not be considered.

As you get ready to complete the application, please be prepared to upload the following into the portal:

The deadline to submit the application and all supporting documentation is September 29, 2023.

Selection and Acceptance

After September 29, 2023, the HLI Steering Committee will review all complete applications. The goal is to select a group of approximately 10 fellows to be part of the HLI 2024 cohort. Once the selection is made, all applicants will receive an email with the decision. Selected Fellows will have the option to accept the Fellowship and commit to the program.

Since the HLI Fellowship program has limited spaces and high demand we recommend to consider the decision seriously before making the final commitment.
