The SUNY Early College Pathways are groupings of academic programs or majors with related courses and career paths. These pathways guide students to explore broad fields of interest by providing details about the academic area and aligned careers. Once a student selects a pathway, the SUNY Early College Pathways guides provide suggested early college courses that give them the best head start for any of the specific majors they may eventually pursue.
There are 64 SUNY colleges and universities statewide, most of which offer early college courses for students at partner high schools. Classes can be offered at the high school, a SUNY campus, or online. Schedules may include evenings or weekends, depending on the institution. AP and IB courses are offered through high schools that end in an optional standardized exam. Upon entering college, students can be awarded college credit based on their scores on the optional AP or IB exams. Early college courses, on the other hand, are offered through the college, and students are awarded college credit that can count towards a future program or degree.
Early college courses have many benefits for high school students. They provide a head-start on a college degree, reducing the time and money they need to spend once they go to college. They give high school students a chance to get used to college-level work while still in a familiar environment.
