Welcome to the State University of New York (SUNY) Healthcare Simulation Resource Library, a centralized and evolving platform that supports simulation-based education across the State University of New York.
In May 2023, Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation that permits nursing students in New York to complete up to one-third of their clinical training through high-quality simulation. In response, SUNY has launched system-wide efforts to expand simulation capacity, ensure quality, and support simulation-facing professional development.
Healthcare simulation provides students with structured, hands-on learning experiences that mirror real-world clinical situations. Through guided scenarios, students build clinical judgement, communication skills, and confidence in a controlled, low-risk, and psychologically safe environment. Simulation allows for repeated practice, exposure to rare or high-risk situations, and immediate feedback and reflection – all of which accelerate learning and reinforce safe, effective care practices that students will use in the workforce.
The SUNY Healthcare Simulation Resource Library is designed to equip SUNY healthcare programs with high-quality, adaptable resources that support effective simulation-based education across SUNY campuses. The Library includes the SUNY Share Simulation & IPE Activity Repository, a collection of vetted, ready to download simulation scenarios and activities spanning various specialties and modalities, and the SUNY SimAcademy: Professional Development for Healthcare Simulation, which introduces professionals to standards of best practice in simulation.
You can access and explore these resources below:
The SUNY Share Simulation & IPE Activity Repository is an open-source database that serves as a collaborative hub where faculty can submit, discover, and download vetted simulation and interprofessional education activities. By expanding access to high-quality, shared learning resources across SUNY institutions, the repository supports diverse learning experiences for students while strengthening faculty capacity and collaboration statewide.
SUNY SimAcademy: Professional Development for Healthcare Simulation provides a foundational framework to support the development, implementation, and advancement of healthcare simulation across SUNY. The program includes a series of online, asynchronous educational modules grounded in nationally recognized standards, with focused instruction in key areas of best practice such as facilitation and debriefing. Content will continue to be developed and added over time. Participants are encouraged to check back regularly for new modules and resources.
The SUNY Healthcare Simulation Shared Resource Library was developed by the SUNY Nursing Simulation Fellowship, a key initiative aimed at further advancing SUNY nursing programs in adopting simulation-based education for students. Read more about the SUNY Nursing Simulation Fellowship here.
SUNY's investments in nursing simulation are based on recommendations from the SUNY Future of Health Care Workforce Task Force, a group convened to guide SUNY in addressing the critical health care workforce shortage and the Governor's goal of increasing the health care workforce in New York State by 20%. Following the engagement with over 125 experts across SUNY institutions as well as the health care industry, the Task Force identified four priority areas for short-term action and investment, including fully leveraging nursing simulation.
