Cornell University is the land-grant university for New York State. It is home to four contract colleges and schools that were created by an Act of the New York State Legislature. Each contract college enjoys the benefits of being part of a private, Ivy League university, while being connected to The State University of New York.

The land-grant mission of the university includes a commitment to make contributions in all fields of knowledge to help improve the quality of life in the state, the nation, the world. In return, the state contributes a portion of the operating expenses of the contract colleges. This allows the contract colleges to keep the cost of tuition lower for New York State residents, making their Cornell degrees more affordable.

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), one of the seven undergraduate colleges at Cornell University, is regarded as the best college of its kind in the world. It is the only college of agriculture and life sciences in the Ivy League and the second largest college at Cornell.

The college is committed to research, education and outreach to improve the quality of life in New York State, the nation and the world. CALS offers over 20 majors, all focusing on the four college priorities: Life Sciences, Applied Social Sciences, Environmental Sciences and Agriculture and Food. Undergraduates have the chance to use their skills and knowledge to answer some of the world’s most pressing social, economic and scientific challenges.

CALS offers a comprehensive career and academic advising system and research opportunities for undergraduate students, as well as a range of academic and experiential prospects.
