Statement from SUNY Board of Trustees and Interim Chancellor Stanley on the Signing of the CHIPS and Science Act

"President Biden's signature on the CHIPS and Science Act today marks a significant chapter in American research and development. It is transformative technological investment reminiscent of the 1960s, when our nation first turned its collective attention to the new frontier of space travel. At the time, the U.S. was pioneering and innovative, with a common goal to reach new heights.
Today, we have an opportunity to be so again as we explore another new frontier in semiconductor research and manufacturing—one that promises new jobs and lower costs on the goods we depend on. The improvements of semiconductor materials and systems – found in our cars, cell phones, and medical devices – will be made by our students and faculty, who will be part of the research, manufacturing, distribution, or sales in this critically important industry. Our gratitude again to Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, who spearheaded this legislation; thanks as well to New York's congressional delegation, led by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, Congressman Paul Tonko, and Congressman Joe Morelle.
Our country needs this moment. New York State has prepared for this moment. The Albany Nanotech complex, in particular, has evolved from strong partnerships and significant funding, and SUNY has proudly supported each step. Our faculty, staff, students, and researchers are ready, and we are excited for the possibilities ahead."
