Fee Waiver Saves Up to $350 Per Applicant, Automatic for Up to Seven SUNY Campuses
Fall 2023 Application Now Live; Promotional Campaign Launched to Inform 55,000 Eligible Seniors of the Waiver, Encourage All Prospective College Students to Apply
Albany, NY – State University of New York today announced that all students at more than 500 high-needs high schools statewide may benefit from an automatic fee waiver to apply to up to seven SUNY schools free of charge. Students at schools with more than 75 percent of their population eligible for free and reduced-price lunch on a three-year rolling basis qualify for the waiver, representing a savings of $350 per applicant.

Each year, SUNY also provides college application fee waivers to students who are in foster care, from low-income households, military-connected students, those who qualify for SUNY’s Educational Opportunity Program, or those graduating with an associate degree from SUNY or CUNY. Thanks to the latest fee waiver approval, 60 percent of all high school seniors can apply for free this year.
"This is an exciting time for high school seniors as they consider their opportunities for Fall 2023. By both waiving the application fee and making it automatically apply for those who are eligible, we are breaking down yet another potential barrier that stands between students and academic success," said SUNY Interim Chancellor Deborah F. Stanley. "We thank the SUNY Board of Trustees for making the fee waiver possible for another 55,000 high school seniors, and we will continue to seek ways to ensure an excellent higher education is within reach of more New Yorkers."
SUNY Board Trustee Camille Joseph Varlack said, "New York State invests heavily in higher education—even more so this year thanks to our Governor and NYS Legislature—making college an affordable reality for so many New Yorkers. This new automatic fee waiver provides yet another incentive for high school seniors to apply to up to seven SUNY campuses, free of charge. We hope they take full advantage today and we will see them on our campuses in Fall 2023."
Research from the National Bureau of Economic Research found that students who are eligible for fee waivers are often still deterred from applying to college due to a complicated application process or confusion about eligibility. With that in mind, SUNY has developed its college application site to ensure this new fee waiver occurs automatically for eligible students—students apply for free and do not need to take additional action—for up to seven SUNY campuses with one application.
SUNY will work with the school districts and community organizations on an outreach campaign to inform eligible students and their families about the fee waiver, as well as financial aid options and educational opportunities available across the system. Eligible students can begin their free application today at suny.edu/apply.
At any time during the application process, students may get answers to questions through the "Live Chat" feature at suny.edu/apply Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There are also virtual informational sessions for students on how to apply beginning on Wednesday, August 24. Students may also schedule a virtual one-on-one appointment with an enrollment counselor at the following link here. Year over year, SUNY receives about 84 percent of its college applications from October to February.
