SUNY CHARTER SCHOOLS INSTITUTE March 12, 2012 Memorandum To: Members of the Education, College Readiness and Success Committee From: Susan Miller Barker, Interim Executive Director, SUNY Charter Schools Institute Subject: Proposals to Establish New Charter Schools SUNY received 18 proposals to establish new charter schools at the end of February; responses to the January 2012 SUNY Request for Proposals (Spring Review Cycle). Among the 18 were 15 proposals seeking to locate charter schools in New York City and one proposal each seeking to establish charter schools in Rochester, Buffalo and Middletown respectively. Attached is a copy of the “Public List” that is posted on the Institute’s website and updated throughout the review process. The Institute conducted an initial review of all proposals for completeness and minimum eligibility requirements and is contacting all lead applicants regarding the status of their proposal. As you know, the full review process is multi-tiered and includes an in-depth academic, legal and fiscal review by Institute staff and, for those proposals that are new to SUNY, review by a panel of external experts in the fields of education and school finance, as well as two interviews of the founding team and proposed board members. Copies of the full proposals are being redacted and will be posted on the Institute's website at: http://www.newyorkcharters.org/ActiveProposals.htm. We anticipate making recommendations regarding these proposals to the Committee in May or June.
