STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK Minutes of Meeting of the Research and Economic Development Committee January 10, 2011 (Subject-to-Correction) The Research and Economic Development Committee of the Board of Trustees of State University of New York met on January 10, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. in the Seminar Room 202, SUNY Global Center, New York, New York pursuant to calls sent by the Office of the Secretary of the University on January 3, 2011. January 10, 2011 3:00 p.m. Research and Economic Development Committee Members present: Mr. Hayden, Chairman, Mr. Belluck, Dr. Lichtman, Ms. Sanford, Mr. Staller Committee Member present via video in Ithaca: Dr. Ehrenberg Also present: Mr. O’Connor, Ms. Preston, Dr. LaRosa, Dr. Heath, Dr. Goodman, Dr. Brunken, Dr. Nachman 1. APPROVAL OF COMMITTEE MINUTES Ms. Sanford called for a motion to approve the proposed minutes of the Committee’s meeting held November 16, 2010. Upon motion of Mr. Staller, seconded by Dr. Lichtman, the proposed minutes were unanimously approved as the official minutes of the meeting held November 16, 2010. 2. COMMITTEE BUSINESS Ms. Sanford called upon Kathy Preston, Interim Vice Chancellor for Financial Services and Health Affairs, to give a brief presentation regarding SUNY REACH. Ms. Preston stated that Dr. LaRosa will give an overview and then Dr. Goodman, Dr. Brunken and Dr. Nachman will give their REACH presentations. Dr. John LaRosa, President of Downstate Medical Center gave an introduction of the SUNY REACH initiative. Dr. David Heath, President of the College of Optometry, provided comments on the collaborative efforts of the researchers. Dr. Goodman, Vice President for Research and Dean of the College of Graduate Studies at Upstate Medical University, thanked the members of the Committee for the opportunity to present SUNY REACH and also thanked the presidents for their support. He stated that they are collaborating across campuses and the goal is to create the State’s largest public biomedical research enterprise with a strategic research focus that benefits the people of New York State. He gave a presentation detailing examples of success stories from Phase 1 of SUNY REACH and also provided financial information pertaining to this initiative. Dr. Goodman stated the three areas of focus are neuroscience, vision clinical and translational research. Dr. William Brunken, Professor, Director of Ophthalmic Research at Downstate Medical Center, provided a presentation regarding the SUNY Eye Institute, which involves all four of the Academic Medical Centers: University at Buffalo, Stony Brook University, Downstate Medical Center, and Upstate Medical Center as well as the College of Optometry. He explained that the SUNY Eye Institute brings all the disciplines of vision research together and discussed examples. Dr. Sharon Nachman, Director, Office of Clinical Trials at Stony Brook University, gave a presentation regarding clinical and translational research and the progress that has been made through collaborative efforts. Dr. Last Name also spoke on the IRB Review program and provided examples of the successes that have been accomplished. Dr. Goodman spoke about Phase 2 of the SUNY REACH project and presented the plans and details for the next phase. He also discussed the goals of Phase 2. Chairman Hayden and the Committee members discussed the SUNY REACH initiative at length and expressed their support. Mr. O’Connor stated that the next item will be discussed in Executive Session. 3.
