Zimpher, Chancellor Subject: Stony Brook University Hospital � Quality Assessment Review Board I recommend that the Board of Trustees adopt the following resolution: Whereas by Resolution 2007-28, adopted March 20, 2007, the State University Board of Trustees established the Quality Assessment Review Board for Stony Brook University Hospital; and Whereas Resolution 2007-28 provides that the members of the Quality Assessment Review Board shall be appointed by the State University Board of Trustees upon the recommendation of the Chancellor, in consultation with the President of Stony Brook University; now, therefore, be it Resolved that David Acker be, and hereby is, appointed as a member of the Quality Assessment Review Board for a three year term. Background By Resolution 2007-28, adopted March 20, 2007, the State University Board established the Quality Assessment Review Board for Stony Brook University Hospital, and established the role, function, membership, and qualifications for membership thereof. By Resolution 2007-99, adopted May 31, 2007, the State University Board appointed the initial members of the Quality Assessment Review Board. The Quality Assessment Review Board consists of not fewer than nine nor more than twelve external members and no more than three ex officio members recommended by the Chancellor, in consultation with the President of Stony Brook University, and appointed by the State University Board. Five external members shall be distinguished residents of Suffolk County, two external members shall be residents of New York State who are physicians in good standing, and at least one member shall be a registered nurse employed by Stony Brook Hospital. Each member serves at the pleasure of the State University Board of Trustees for a term of up to three years. By this resolution, the State University Board appoints David Acker to a membership position for a term of three years. Mr. Acker replaces Joseph Purcell, who has resigned. Attachment David Acker � Biography Davis Acker has a history as an entrepreneur and inventor. He found his first company during his fourth year in graduate school, and has founded at least three companies since then. Much of his work at Stony Brook focused on the field of neurobiology, and since then, Mr. Acker has done a great deal of work with medical imaging. He is the recipient of over 25 US patents. David Acker is currently Chief Technology Officer for Vitality Products, LLC, a privately held development stage medical device company. The company is developing a high intensity focused ultrasound platform technology for incisionless male surgical sterilization. Vitality Medical Products is based in San Diego, California and was spun out of ProRhythm, Inc., which Mr. Acker founded in 1997. At that time the company was called Transurgical. It was chartered to develop a unique miniature MRI and high intensity focused ultrasound technology to ablate soft tissue targets throughout the body, including benign and cancerous tumors. Prior to Transurgical, Mr. Acker was the co-founder of Biosense, Inc. and served as Executive Vice-President-Operations, Secretary and Director since its inception in 1994. He was the inventor of the core miniature location sensing technology around which the company�s three cardiology and image-guided surgery product lines were based. Healthcare giant Johnson & Johnson acquired Biosense in 1997. Mr. Acker founded Workstation Graphics, Inc. in 1991 and served as its President and CEO until it was acquired by Biosense in 1994. Mr. Acker also founded MediCAD Corporation in 1989, one of the early developers of surgical simulation software packages, and served as its Vice President for Product Development through 1991. In addition, Mr. Acker founded ACDA Corporation in 1984, a manufacturer of data-acquisition and process control software and hardware and served as its President and CEO through 1994.
