The State University of New York complies with the New York State Sexual Orientation Non-Discrimination Act of 2002. Discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is prohibited.
The State University of New York complies with the New York State Sexual Orientation Non-Discrimination Act of 2002. Discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is prohibited.
On December 17, 2002, the Governor signed Chapter 2 of the Laws of 2002, referred to as the Sexual Orientation Non-Discrimination Act. This Act, effective January 17, 2003, amends NYS Human Rights Law §292 and NYS Education Law §313 to include sexual orientation as a protected category against which discrimination in employment, credit, housing, public accommodation and education, among other areas, is prohibited.
Since the state-operated campuses of the University have been subject to Executive Order 28, prohibiting sexual orientation discrimination by state agencies, few changes in policy and practice should be necessary. However, campuses should review their non-discrimination statements and policies to ensure that they are consistent with the new legislation. Student organizations, likewise, should be advised to include sexual orientation in their statements of non-discrimination with regard to membership.
