This policy item applies to:
State-Operated Campuses

The State University of New York (University) Policy on Unrestricted Dissemination of Research Activities requires unrestricted dissemination of the conduct, progress, and results of sponsored research. Justifiable exceptions may be granted on a case-by-case basis.
Any research or research-related programs conducted by State University of New York (University) personnel, carried out at the state-operated campuses or on University controlled premises shall be unrestricted as to the dissemination publicly of the conduct, progress and results of such research or research-related programs. Projects which may be considered justifiable exceptions to this policy or might require review because of extenuating factors, such as for the purpose of protecting state and national security, shall be submitted to the chancellor or designee for approval on a case-by-case basis.
This policy is not intended to dictate or control the method by which research findings are reported. The principal investigator for a given project is responsible for making the professional decision regarding the time and the means in which data are made public. Any attempt to force premature dissemination of information or the release of raw data, which for professional reasons should not be disclosed, would be unethical and in violation of the intent of the policy.
