This is how we’re making higher ed work for all who seek it.

We're redefining what it means
to be a student

Higher education is no longer confined to two or four years of campus and lecture halls. It’s whenever you need it, wherever you need it, to stay sharp and learn new skills as the world changes.

That means we’re constantly introducing new ways for you to learn, train, and achieve your goals — on your terms. Here are a few examples:

Adult student Rebecca Rosa sits at a school desk writing while wearing a face mask.

"They gave me the opportunity to work and finish school. So that's what I did. I'm giving an example to my kids to say you know what, it's never too late."

We're making education more affordable

SUNY is a public institution. We were founded to educate as many people as possible, at the highest quality, for the lowest cost.

We’re not here for profit.

Our tuition and fees are already lower than most other institutions, and we’re always looking for new ways to make college more affordable.

This spring, we eliminated application fees for low-income students.

Most people have more options than they think when it comes to paying for college. Learn about financial aid, scholarships, and more.

We're working
to build a brighter, better world

Researchers across SUNY are advancing the science and technologies to create a healthier, smarter, more sustainable, and more just world for all.

SUNY research accounts for 25% of all active research in New York State, with $1.7 billion in annual investment, 7,000 active projects, and more than 1,760 patents.

Research priorities include:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Clean energy
  • COVID-19 and infectious diseases
  • Next-gen computing
  • Biomedicine
  • Environmental health

"Studying dormancy is therefore crucial not only for filling in the gap in knowledge to complete our understanding of life, but also for exploring how to best leverage this knowledge to improve the quality of life during our active states."

We're supporting the whole student

We know that we need to look beyond the classroom to ensure our students have the full support they need to focus and achieve their goals. Because it’s hard to succeed if you’re hungry, or if you’re struggling with your mental health.

That’s why we introduced automatic enrollment in SNAP for anyone taking courses at our Educational Opportunity Centers and Online Training Center.

It's why we’re investing in our campus food pantries.

Why we’re expanding mental health support services for students.

And why we’re providing child care on every campus.

We're closing opportunity gaps

SUNY was founded, in part, to combat discriminatory admissions practices of other colleges at the time.

Today, we are still working to correct historic injustices and exclusionary practices to ensure everyone, no matter their background, has a fair shot at an education and upward mobility.

That starts by looking inward, which is why we’re making sure our faculty, staff, and leadership reflect the populations we serve. Read our full Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Action Plan.

"Being an African American female, we have a lot of self-doubts because people are always telling us we can’t. I was talking to an actual patient yesterday and it was amazing. We were actually touching hearts and lungs – I’m speechless."

We're creating
more ways in and more ways up

We’re providing more opportunities for everyone to find a place at SUNY, then move through the system to take advantage of the power of 64 colleges and universities all working together for your success.

That includes the country’s most comprehensive credit transfer policy so you can move easily from one SUNY institution to another.

It also includes automatic enrollment for all EOC and Online Training Center program-completers to SUNY’s 30 community colleges, SUNY Empire State College, SUNY Canton, and SUNY Delhi.

"The mission of The State University System shall be to provide to the people of New York educational services of the highest quality, with the broadest possible access, fully representative of all segments of the population..."
