SUNY To Host "Poetry Out Loud" Competition Statewide

Albany — The State University of New York is partnering with the Teachers & Writers Collaborative, National Endowment for the Arts, and New York State Council on the Arts to facilitate New York State's Poetry Out Loud Contest, which is held simultaneously in states across the nation and in countries world-wide.
SUNY campuses will host regional competitions for high school students beginning next week, and the State Finals will be held at SUNY System Administration in Albany, in March.
“SUNY campuses are ideal settings for community events like this, and we are thrilled to be opening up our facilities and providing an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to volunteer as part of this spirited competition,” said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. “Poetry Out Loud is a valuable and enriching experience for all involved and an important component of SUNY's K-12 partnerships and Vibrant Communities initiative. Thank you to our partners and volunteers across the state, and best of luck to the competitors.”
“NYSCA is grateful for the support of SUNY and a host of other partners to sponsor New York State's Poetry Out Loud Contest,” said Aby Rosen, New York State Council on the Arts Chair. “This program is a shining example of an exciting participatory learning event for high school students and a successful collaborative project model. We wish all the competitors luck and let's hope New York State's winner triumphs at the national finals held in Washington, DC.”
