International Institute

Offered by University at Albany

Spain

Locations:  Spain (Madrid)

The University at Albany has administered the program in Madrid since 1970, making it a well-established American university program. Students study Spain's cultural heritage and recent modernization through coursework at the Instituto Internacional, a prestigious educational institution that is also home to programs from several private U.S. universities, including Boston University and Syracuse Universtiy. The Instituto Internacional, established in 1892, is located near the center of Madrid and has classrooms, a library, an auditorium, and a small cafeteria. The Institute is not a Spanish university, but rather an institution that sponsors a variety of academic and cultural programs for Americans and Spaniards, including conversation groups, lectures, and dramatic and musical performances. Cultural excursions and field trips, along with planned activities with native speakers, serve to enhance your learning experience.

This program features a selection of upper division undergraduate courses in Spanish language, literature, art, cinema, history, and social sciences. Courses are taught in Spanish by Spanish professors, however full fluency in Spanish is not required. Classes are small, encouraging open discussion and providing ample opportunities for individual attention. You must have an intermediate or advanced level of Spanish language skills in order to participate in this program; at least one Spanish course above the intermediate level is recommended. Students with sufficient language skills may be able to enroll in an independent study course in conjunction with a local university in Madrid.

Part-time INTERNSHIPS in a wide variety of fields are also available.

While in Madrid you will have the support of the UAlbany staff: a Program Director/Academic Adviser and a Program Assistant. Together they are responsible for all aspects of the program in Madrid, including educational curriculum, housing arrangements, and cultural excursions.

Participants are given the opportunity to live with host families and to experience Spanish culture first-hand. Students also have the option of making their own housing arrangements in local apartments in Madrid.
