Journalism Without Walls

“Journalism Without Walls,” offered through Stony Brook University’s School of Journalism, provides students an opportunity to learn their craft outside the classroom. The goal is to provide student journalists with a broader and deeper understanding of the world. Previous projects have included: A week-long exploration of Havana; a month-long exploration of St. Petersburg and Northern Russia and a three week long journey along China’s legendary Silk Road.  Most recently, our Journalism students spent time in Istanbul, Turkey and will be headed to Bangalore, India during Summer 2015.  Students’ work will be professionally published on the Journalism School's web site.

Summer in St. Petersburg

Experience SBU’s Summer in St. Petersburg - Russia’s cultural center since its creation by Peter the Great in the early 18th Century. This program, founded by SBU Professor of Linguistics John Bailyn, is housed at St. Petersburg State University, Russia’s oldest university and offers courses in a variety of disciplines.

Established in 1919, the State University of Management is one of the largest state universities of Russia. It is known for developing new management specializations to fit the needs of the ever changing world economy. Students will have the opportunity to enroll in regular university classes at the State University of Management. Fields of study include management, marketing, human resource management, state and municipal management, and economics and production management in national economy. Students live in university residence halls.

Advanced Critical Language Institute (ACLI) in St. Petersburg

The Advanced Critical Language Institute for Russian Immersion (ACLI) is specifically designed to help students improve their fluency in all aspects of the Russian language.  More advanced ACLI students pledge to speak only Russian for the duration of the program and enjoy Russian speaking homestays. All participants study for four to five hours daily in small groups with native speaking specialists from St. Petersburg State University, one of Russia’s oldest and most famous educational institutions.
