Ghana is a small, tropical, English-speaking, West African nation of about twenty million people. Ghanaian people have unrivalled hospitality and are open and welcoming to Europeans and Americans. Ghana is a beautiful, tropical country boasting rain forests, wildfire parks, and pristine beaches. Ghana's rich cultural history and strong artisan heritage inspire the colorful crafts found in many Ghanaian marketplaces. Accra, the capital of Ghana, is a bustling, rapidly growing city of almost two million people and is approx. eight miles from the University of Ghana. Accra has a lively night life, affordable restaurants, and a decidedly "non-touristy" atmosphere that makes it a real resource for the participants of this program. Founded in 1948 as the University College of the Gold Coast, the University of Ghana, Legon has been placed on the Top 100 Universities in Africa and is revered for its outstanding professors and distinguished alumni.

Ghana: An Artistic Expression

Locations:  Ghana (Accra)

Experience a culture where the heart and soul of music and drumming brings people to their feet to dance; a culture where the arts are a major part of life. Daily activities include: museum visits, music and dance lessons, bead and drum making demonstrations, batik making and kente weaving. We will travel north to the Ashanti Chief's palace in Kumasi; to Mole National Park where the wild elephants and monkeys live; to Kakum National Park in western Ghana where we'll walk on a canopy 200 feet above the ground; and finally to visit the slave trade castles in Elmina and Cape Coast. Students are required to keep a daily journal, attend all activities, and participate in the service learning project and International Expo when they return.

Ghana Inter-session Program

Locations:  Ghana (Various)

This faculty-led, 3-week, 6-credit course located in Accra, Ghana, includes a series of guest lecturers from Ghanaian faculty that will discuss the evolution of Ghana while staying at the Yiri Lodge located on the University of Ghana campus. Participants will also explore the cultural landscape of Ghana through various field trips and guided tours to areas of political, educational, social, and historical significance. Cultural, historical, and social excursions include visits to Mole National Park, Cape Coast and Elmina Castle, Kakum Reserve Forest and Famous Canopy Walk, Shia Hill hiking trails, W.E.B. Dubois Centre, local markets and museums, as well as, volunteering at a local NGO.

The University of Ghana is the oldest and largest of Ghana's five universities. It is located in Accra, the capital of Ghana, which has a lively nightlife, affordable restaurants, and decidedly "non-touristy" atmosphere that makes it a real resource for the participants of this program. Participants will have the opportunity to enroll in regular university classes at the University of Ghana. Prior to departure, participants select an individual program of study from the more than 350 courses available to overseas students. Fields of study include archeology, architecture, broadcasting, business, communications, computer science, criminal justice, earth sciences, ecology, education, engineering, fine, visual and performing arts, journalism, health and nutrition, history, humanities, information technology, language study, law, linguistics, literature, math, natural and physical sciences, philosophy, physical education, practical classroom experience, social sciences, and sports science. Housing is in university residence halls. All instruction is by the University of Ghana faculty.
