Political Theatre in Prague

Offered by Purchase College

Czech Republic

Locations:  Czech Republic (Prague)

At the Academy of Drama (DAMU) Campus in Prague, students study and perform plays by Václav Havel, the dissident playwright imprisoned during the Communist era who became President of the Czech Republic. Students will explore political and cultural contexts of theatrical performance, enhanced by meetings with theatre professionals and visits to sites relevant to the intersection of artistic creation and political revolution.  Students will also consider how the playwright responded to developments in European culture and politics during the post-World War II Communist era, the period after the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, when Havel becomes a dissident organizer, the fall of Communism in 1989 (the "Velvet Revolution," with Havel as its leader), and the subsequent transition to democracy. Student will investigate the importance of culture, particularly Theatre, in the search for freedom.

While this course focuses on drama and the theatre, it is designed in such a way that non-theatre majors, especially those in humanities, history, and political science (as well as those with an ethnic interest in Central Europe) may take advantage of its resources. Non-theatre majors will have an opportunity to participate in theatrical training and performance aspects of the course without prejudice or penalty for their background, or lack of it, in this subject.
