Restoring Healthcare
Healthcare in New York is changing, and our teaching hospitals need adequate funding to address basic needs while their missions continue to evolve.
The Executive Budget included a reduction in the direct support provided to these institutions of $18.5 million, returning it to 2013/14 levels. Our hospitals have not received bonded capital support since 2008/09. This has left two out of three institutions facing mounting critical maintenance concerns, while also looking for ways to strategically invest in their operations.
Operating
We need restoration of the $18.5M eliminated in the Executive Budget from the State’s direct support for SUNY’s three teaching hospitals. While we understand there may be additional operating support made available in other areas of the budget for at least one of our teaching hospitals, this is only a short-term fix and will not address the long-term funding needs of these institutions.
Capital
As a result of our hospitals receiving zero capital authority since 2008-09, they face a number of critical safety and accreditation issues. Therefore, SUNY is requesting that all or a portion of the $400.0M in the Executive Budget for upstate or rural hospitals be specifically provided for our institutions.
