GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  This is a professional position with Ulster County Community College through contract with NYC Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) Stream Management Program (SMP) in support of the DEP SMP Programs. The SMP Research Program documents stream morphology, sediment transport dynamics, stream stability restoration methods and success, aquatic habitat and biotic community  condition and erosion rates.  This research is used to develop tools for improved stream management and stewardship in the five counties West of Hudson New York City Watershed region.  The Coordinator’s work will support all aspects of the SMP’s Research Program and report to the SMP Research Program Manager.  Throughout the year, work will include additional data collection, analysis, interpretation, quality control, organization and incorporation into DEP’s GIS and Stream Geodatabase, preparation of technical reports and presentations, contracting and other administration, a coordination of work with DEPSMP partner organizations, and equipment maintenance and organization.   

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

 

1.      The WCCC will work with multiple resource agencies, landowners, local governments and internal DEP program staff as needed. 

2.     WCCC will be primary liaison between DEP and UCCC in administering the UCCC WCC program, including direct supervision of student interns.

3.     Preparing performance evaluations for each student intern following the field season.

4.     Developing and providing presentations and training on stream geomorphology, biomonitoring, GPS or other topics as needed or required to UCCC students (interns and enrolled students), the public or other groups, in coordination with SMP and UCCC science departments.

5.     Working with the advising professor, and assisting UCCC student interns in completing a special research project, report or laboratory for credit.

6.     Compiling, organizing and analyzing historical data and photography, existing  GIS and/or field data.

7.     Compiling, organizing, and analyzing data on file and data collected through WCCC tenure pertaining to areas.

8.     Working with partner groups to coordinate activities of the Streamside Assistance Program, performing site assessments for riparian improvement, and supporting design, installation and monitoring of streamside projects.

9.     Updating SMP databases and providing data Quality Control.

10.  Assisting the SMP with equipment purchase and maintenance for field and office work.

11.  Ensuring adequate training and equipment are available for prescribed  work according to DEP Environmental Health and Safety and Personal Protective Equipment requirements.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:   Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science or related field; experience in word-processing, spreadsheet and/or database software; experience with at least one of GIS,GPS, elevation survey or biological/physical habitat survey with analysis and interpretation; experience in field-based stream assessment, biological/vegetative assessment or other field assess-ment methods required. 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Master’s degree or at least two years experience in environ-mental science related field; solid mathematics or statistics background, verbal communication skills, scientific research and supervisory experience strongly preferred.
